I am rewinding here a little and looking back at my trip from LAX to Portland. I have been reading the autobiography of Steve Jobs and was intrigued at how one person (Steve Wozniak) changed the face of computing. It was his ground breaking design of a micro chip that led to the birth of the Apple 2. If you grew up with one of the original Apple computers it is a fascinating story of machines you simply took for granted.
Glancing out the airplane window to the West the sun begins to set and the light bounces off the ground at low angles. Large mountainess land that remains largely uninhabited and unusable for cultivation gives way to flat arable land. From up here, things look so perfectly arranged, balanced. I am astonished for a moment as the structure of the earth looks much like a computer circuit board. I find it intriguing and at the same time shocking to see the impact of this man made system on the earth, this manufactured landscape.
Looking out to the West approaching Portland, Oregon.
